Protecting Forests in Ain, France from Climate Change

The forests in the Haute-Chaîne du Jura Reserve Naturelle Nationale in Ain, France, are significantly impacted by climate change. The increased heat and drought weaken trees and contribute to the spread of scolytid beetles, which attack epiceas and lead to their demise. On April 23, 2023, the National Forest Office and France Nature Environnement collaborated to host a workshop, showcasing the actions implemented to address this situation. During the event, Joël Bourgeot discussed the ongoing work with all involved parties and Pays de Gex agglomération, the reserve manager, to establish regulations for sustainable forestry and biodiversity protection. Two prefectorial decrees have been enacted to regulate selective logging within the reserve, balancing biodiversity conservation and management of affected trees.
